To apply eye shadow you should always move from the outer eye lid to inner eye lid.

step by step...there ya go :)
use a make up brush and put your darker colours on the bottom and go father out with them. Then put your lighter colors(gold, silver, ext...) If you are putting on liquid liner, it goes on the bottom.
Choose a color (preferably something close to a neutral, or a pink/bronze etc.: not the 80's anymore)
Using a pad (like, the brushes with little pads at the end), apply a fair amount of eyeshadow ON THE BRUSH!
Then, in a swift movement, wipe the shadow onto your eye. You want to generally get the area that is exposed when you close your eye and a little, little bit above it. Anything more is just too much.
You start the inner eye corner with the brush and go to the outer eye corner....add as much as you like but to make it evv...smear it in with your finger
Pressing, instead of sweeping, eye shadow on your eyelids with your finger or eye shadow brush will help achieve a brighter more brilliant color on your eyes.
swipe the brush from the tear sac of your eye across the eyelid. If it is a very light shade you can apply it up to ur eyebrow...if not, only to where the crease is...:-)
First you take your finger or a brush and you slowly lower it to the eyeshadow you are using. Next, swipe your instrument through the powder or cream and bring it back on up to your eyelid. Finally, spread the eyeshadow on your eyelid and you should be good to go.
darker colors are to be aplied to the skin above the eye ball and the lighter colors are to be aplied to the skin below the eye brow
covergirl has this wonderful eyeshaodw. there are four diiferent coloured squares and each square tells you where to apply the eyeshadow. its amazing!!
you know the little crease in your eye well only put eyeshadow to it and not over it
