How do you apply eyeshadow correctly?

Modeling schools suggest the brush...but stores suggest the dobber. Go to one of the better stores that have more expensive make up (go at a time when they aren't that busy) an ask them to make over your eyes. That way you'll get an idea whether they use creame or matte, and where they put the darker colors for accent, and the highlighters, or the tones to bring out the color in your eyes, and what they blot it with or cover it with to keep the shadow in place. Or, call Mary Kay as they will do the make-over for you in your own home. How do you apply eyeshadow correctly?
There are tons of ways to put on eyeshadow for different looks, but I read that the ';current'; way is to pick a medium color you like, put it on your eyelid AND the same color in the crease, then line your eyes and put on mascara. I like this look with a gold brown color.

For 80's style (which I still think looks fine, as long as it's not blue), use a medium color on the lid, dark color in the crease, and ';highlighter'; on the brow bone.

Maybe you should go to a make-up counter at a department store and have a makeover done by one of the professionals there, though you might have to buy something that way. You could also visit a store like Sephora or Merle Norman which specializes in cosmetics and get a complimentary makeover there (aka free of charge). These people are great at helping out because they are actually putting the makeup on your face, so it's more personalized instructions than just general directions as to how to apply makeup.
