use one base colour: white with a brush. Apply up just underneath eyebrows.
then use a smaller, neat eyeshadow brush to apply a medium colour, like brown or something neutral if you are testing out.
Put it on your eyelid, sweep it across and blend with your finger.
If you want to go a little bit more out there, apply (with a thinner brush) a darker colour along the crease of the eyelid and on the outer corners of the eye in a v-shape.

The crease in your eyelid is sort of the line of no return. You normally apply a really light skin toned shadow over you whole eyelid, an then the colour you want below the crease and above the eyelashes, So that its only a faint colour. You can sometimes add a darker shade in the corner closest to your nose for some effects.
Like Dark brown, fading into a bronze....

Use a square cut eyeshadow brush with a full head. There are good ones available from eyeslipsface.com and they're really cheap, about a dollar each. Use this brush to put your shadow all over your eyelid until the crease.
shadow brushes, i get mine from eyeslipsface.com, they're only $1 and they're great. you should also use a primer, i would recommend urban decay primer potion or too faced shadow insurance.

use ur fingers! its easier, cheaper and u can do any effect.
